Drinking games are highly popular across the states, the UK, Russia, and throughout Europe. Australians and Kiwis have been known to frequently get involved with various types of games involving alcohol, and certain age groups take part almost religiously.

Students and backpackers seem especially keen to get involved, and for the latter, it can be a great way to bond with people they are sharing a dorm or guesthouse with. These games can cross languages and cultures and there are more and more variations appearing.

There are classic card drinking games but nowadays there are also ones that are linked to movies, and even video games. Drinking games linked to popular titles such as Dota 2, League of Legends, and Fifaare easy to find online.

However, as fun as the games are, sometimes unexpected or unforeseen events happen. Sometimes these are downright funny and will make for great repeat storytelling, but on other occasions, they could be unfortunate, or even disastrous.

Here are five things that could, possibly, maybe, happen to you. So, play with caution and have fun.

1) Falling asleep

Ok, so this one doesn't sound so bad, but perhaps it depends where you do it. According to the website WebMD, imbibing alcohol doesn't or shouldn't lead to a good night's sleep, but it can certainly bring on a premature end to the evening for some.

Many people have found themselves surprised to have woken up surrounded by friends after becoming a little too relaxed by their surroundings, and maybe the beers they drank before.

The problem with this is when you do it in public, such as a bar, and find yourself no longer welcome by the management. Or, you do it at a friend's house only to wake up with Sharpie drawings on your forehead. Beware of your tiredness levels before settling into a heavy drinking game, and don't choose the comfy chair.

2) Forgetting the rules and bickering

When playing drinking games it is not surprising if someone in the group hasn't played before. This can be especially true if the group has just met at a hostel in Europe or are new students on campus for the beginning of the semester.

Learning new rules and then drinking can lead to forgetfulness, confusion, and sometimes bickering. Kings is a great drinking game and is known by many other names too including Ring of Fire. It has simple rules but not knowing them will often lead to being last on many of the turns of the card.

This of course will lead to that person drinking more than the others and probably forgetting even more of the rules, and perhaps being less than happy.

Not the worst thing that can happen generally but it will often lead to at least one person losing face, feeling a bit daft, and waking up the next day trying to remember exactly what they said during the argument.

3) Saying I love you or falling in love

The thing to understand about alcohol is it can be an aphrodisiac, or it can swing the moment completely the other way.

It is not unusual for some people to suddenly feel an overwhelming feeling of affection for someone after they have had a few drinks, and perhaps even tell them how they feel. Of course, if someone was flat-out drunk, it probably wouldn't be so flattering to the object of their affection.

A person could always take this further though and propose to their regular partner during a drinking game and then wake up the next day in a state of panic, or if there was unrequited love then alcohol might spur them on to do something else.

If you are enjoying the company at a drinking game, and a few shots have given you the courage to speak up but nothing is coming back, then you may want to take it to the next level. Hiring a witch that will cast a love spell on your drinking game partner is a possibility. You have to wonder what both of you will make of it the next day though.

4) Upping the stakes

You might think that blurting out your intentions and employing white witches to cast spells of love on someone you are attracted to was already 'upping the stakes', but it could get worse.

Alcohol causes inhibitions to slide, and people are more likely to suggest something they wouldn't normally. There you are having a fun and friendly game of Around the World, and the next thing you know, someone has suggested stripping and running around the campus naked.

Rules get changed, forfeits get worse, bad things happen. And these days with everyone having a smartphone with a camera to hand, you don't want to be involved in that.

A few minutes of what seems like fun trying to outdo each other, and a lifetime of you on the internet streaking across the playing fields. On the bright side, you might go viral and become famous.

5) Break the law or upset the locals

Out of all the things that could go wrong with a drinking game, this is the one you don't want to happen.

Although Covid has put a pause on most people's travels, there would normally be millions of people taking extended breaks that allow them to explore other countries and even continents.

Southeast Asia is one of the most popular places for backpackers and travelers to head to as it offers a completely different experience from anywhere in the west. Thailand is by far the largest draw but Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and Malaysia, all attract plenty of visitors too.

However, while the differences between the west and the east are part of the attraction, they can also present many problems.

Drunken behavior is not appreciated in these countries, and plenty of backpackers have fallen foul to the law in Cambodia during crackdowns, and in nearby nations.

Nudity or dressing inappropriately can be an issue. Loud and crude behavior is also unappreciated and may be punished under the law if it becomes too much. Cards are also something to be aware of.

As a keen drinking game fan, you will be aware that a number of these games use playing cards. What you might not be aware of is that playing with cards is illegal in some countries. This is because gambling is illegal and cards are associated with this activity.

It is not unheard of for police in Laos to approach tourists playing an innocent game of cards and tell them to stop, and confiscate the deck. Respectful behavior though is likely to mean that a blind eye would be turned towards westerners.

Summary

Drinking games really can be a bunch of fun and they are extremely easy to arrange. It might be true that most drinking games happen on the spur of the moment. Someone suggests a game of Kings and the next thing you know you are all racing to touch the floor and avoid being the one who has to take the next shot.

Keeping your wits about you is necessary sometimes though. Too many shots and you could wake up with something rude scrawled across your forehead, realize you are now engaged, find yourself on YouTube, or worse, a Cambodian police station. Drink safely, play safely!
